1961: His Latest Flame

This is one of my favorite Elvis Presley songs, but as I said in my notes on YouTube, I changed from another song at the last moment. This led to me doing two songs in a row that were written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. I don't mind if you don't!

"His Latest Flame" was originally recorded by the great Del Shannon in June 1961, two months before Elvis committed his version to vinyl. Elvis's B-side was "Little Sister" - another great tune (and another Pomus/Shuman song).

Some of the other songs that were being considered for this slot included Elvis's "Can't Help Falling In Love", Patsy Cline's (and Willie Nelson's) "Crazy", "Travelin' Man", and "I Love How You Love Me". The song that was bumped was "Hello, Mary Lou", which was made famous by Ricky Nelson. (But don't worry, a different Ricky song is on the way.)

As always, please share this with your friends and on Facebook. And be watching for two songs representing 1962 - see you then!
